@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsbut I have higher priority stuff lined up first13:54:42
@eighthave:matrix.org_hcI use fastmail and am happy with it13:54:53
@nico:dorfbrunnen.euNico We need a SRV record for the domain inside Riot (e.g. @nico:f-droid.org), an A and an AAAA record. Will write this down once I'm back to my laptop. 13:55:11
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsyeah, fastmail is cool, but it's not very cheap13:55:16
@eighthave:matrix.org_hctutanota could be interesting, given their support of fdroid13:55:14
@nico:dorfbrunnen.euNicoYou can do it with mailbox.org, iirc.13:55:37

In reply to @nico:dorfbrunnen.eu
_hc: Thanks. I would have voted for synapse.f-droid.org, in case we once switch to that other not-yet existing Matrix server software. But I'm fine with matrix.f-droid.org, too.
I think that is more a reason for not going with synapse.*? because we want to keep the address when changing homeserver implementations.
13:55:55
@nico:dorfbrunnen.euNicoMarcus (BubuIIC): But the address will ever be f-droid.org, synapse.f-droid.org would just handle that domain.13:56:38
@eighthave:matrix.org_hcthe domain name is not set yet, so just decide and mark it in that issue13:56:42
@nico:dorfbrunnen.euNico Correct me if I'm wrong. 13:56:47
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsI'm actually not 100% if moving domain pointing the SRV record to the new domain would work, but I'm fairly sure it should13:57:54
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijseither way: if we ever move from synapse to dendrite (or whatever) we'll probably want to discintinue one and move to the next, so we may as well keep the very same domain name13:58:27
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsthough I guess having two seperate domains could decrease the downtime a bit13:58:54
@eighthave:matrix.org_hc Nico: you should be able to ssh in now, check your email 13:59:18
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsthat will mostly depend on whether migrating is faster, or the DNS updating is faster13:59:21
@eighthave:matrix.org_hc I installed unattended-upgrades and https apt sources. I also disabled password auth in sshd. check the bash history for exactly what all I did 14:00:14
@eighthave:matrix.org_hcanyone ever used a tor onion service for a matrix domain name?14:01:38
@eighthave:matrix.org_hcalso, I added a 2GB swap file at /var/swap as insurance. if disk space is low and memory usage under control, it can alwys be deleted14:08:32
@nico:dorfbrunnen.euNico

Nico: you should be able to ssh in now, check your email

Will do once I'm at my laptop. Thanks!

anyone ever used a tor onion service for a matrix domain name?
I know someone did that and from what I remember it did work
14:10:24
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsthough I don't think I'd recommend trying14:10:30
@nico:dorfbrunnen.euNico

anyone ever used a tor onion service for a matrix domain name?

That would be cool! Let's add it to the roadmap.

14:10:55
@nico:dorfbrunnen.euNico

also, I added a 2GB swap file at /var/swap as insurance. if disk space is low and memory usage under control, it can alwys be deleted

Will add this to the docs.

14:11:29
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsyou could even use matrix as a bridge to outside tor14:12:04
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsby setting up plain federation, but have the client-side facing through tor14:12:27
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsI have very little experience with tor, though14:12:58
@nico:dorfbrunnen.euNico

by setting up plain federation, but have the client-side facing through tor

That would be nice and I'll add it to the roadmap.

14:16:27
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijshow did you end up installing synapse yourself? Since it's already in a VM I'd argue that a python 3 venv would be a good way to go14:26:37
@eighthave:matrix.org_hcoh, meeting time today also14:28:45
@mathijs:matrix.vgorcum.comMathijsthough we could also use the debian repo of matrix.org14:28:02
