izzy_ | Not pressing, just asking :) | 23:25:00 |
@bubuiic:matrix.org | 33 was skipped. | 23:25:12 |

Nico Alt | _hc: There doesn't exist a list of all F-Droid mirrors yet, right? We could probably extend the list of known repositories to include them, so people can add them manually until they are added officially to the index. | 12:12:09 |

_hc | not that I know of | 12:15:16 |
_hc | I'm not sure we want to add mirrors to the index, I think someone should create something like deb.debian.org which automatically directs to the closes mirror | 12:15:51 |
_hc | then we could eventually add that to the index | 12:16:04 |
Nico Alt | _hc: OK, but censorship circumvention wouldn't work then, right?
If we had a GitHub mirror directly built into the app, a censor would need to block all GitHub to block F-Droid. But if we only had something similar to deb.debian.org built in, they could simply block all f-droid.org and are done. Do I see this correctly? | 15:19:40 |
_hc | yes, that is true to some degree | 15:20:33 |
_hc | but users can always add mirrors | 15:20:46 |
_hc | we need to roll this out carefully, since we don't want to break things for everyone | 15:20:59 |

That's true. But as a goal in the future, I think it's nice to have that type of censorship circumvention directly built in the client, i.e. people just get the .apk and the client finds its way around the censorship itself. | 15:38:38 |
_hc | i agree 😄 | 15:44:29 |
_hc | one piece of that which we already have is the ability to add custom mirrors | 15:44:54 |
_hc | I'm specifically working right now on makind the mirror support work smoothly with offline WiFI AP boxes like LibraryBox/PirateBox | 15:45:26 |
_hc | also, getting mirrors on USB/SDCards into the releases | 15:46:47 |
_hc | the prototype is pretty slick, you just plug in a little USB OTG thumb drive, and F-Droid then gets it automatically from there, no internet or even local wifi needed | 15:47:39 |
