linsui | Some devs just don't bother to setup an instance since translators can simply open PRs. | 13:58:46 |
stokito | A dev ideally should add a link to translations on the repo's README | 13:58:56 |
linsui | Yes, but there is not too much F-Droid can do. E.g., the official weblate instance only accept projects with enough reputation or something. It doesn't accept new project. | 14:01:00 |
linsui | Other translation platforms are not FOSS so F-Droid can't recommad them either. | 14:01:54 |
Licaon_Kter[xmpp] | This ^^^ | 14:03:27 |
stokito | Let's split levels
- F-Droid can recommend translation services, including the Toolate as the most permissive and welcoming.
- F-Droid may require to accept translations. This is too strict requirement, but we may require to at leas confirm that he will accept translations (like the Tailscale who won't)
- The Toolate can be used without involving a dev: just send PRs as usual. It may automatically register apps. The F-Droid can show it as a default Translations link for the app.
- The dev needs to put a link to the Toolate in README and F-Droid metadata

not a big issue, they are tools to make a FOSS contribution. An electricity is also not FOSS but we use it.

I already rised the topic to talk with them and get an exception for apps added to F-Droid

F-Droid only has requirements about FOSS. Accepting translation is unrelated. F-Droid doesn't require accepting issues, not PRs. All of these are unrelated to FOSS.

linsui | Maybe codeberg is also a good instance. Not sure if it has any policy. | 14:12:37 |
linsui | I thought we can have a list of suggested translation services. | 14:13:31 |
stokito | at least for security critical apps like wallets and browsers the app should be well maintained | 14:14:15 |
stokito | yes, they doesn't have a pre-moderation but they won't send a PR on GitHub (their competitor) | 14:15:09 |
stokito | Maybe we can add recommendations for translation service here:
https://f-droid.org/en/docs/Translation_and_Localization/
Or create a separate page? | 14:17:20 |
linsui |
The F-Droid can show it as a default Translations link for the app.
- Toolate is a third-party service
- Not all platforms are supported
| 14:17:30 |
linsui | Feel free to open an MR. :) We can discuss about the details there. | 14:20:43 |
stokito | Toolate's owner openly proposed to use it's server for this :) The F-Droid project itself can deligate this. To be able to change a translation service if needed can be used a subdomain | 14:26:09 |
rando | In reply to @rdfg77:kde.org Some devs just don't bother to setup an instance since translators can simply open PRs. depends on how familiar they are with git | 14:32:25 |
rando | In reply to @rdfg77:kde.org Maybe codeberg is also a good instance. Not sure if it has any policy. codeberg translation have terrible contrast | 14:33:08 |
rando | on dark theme | 14:33:12 |
Licaon_Kter[xmpp] | :)) | 14:33:35 |
linsui | Maybe you can use the light theme with dark reader lol | 14:34:13 |
