couldbemathijs | Hi | 11:32:59 |
Mathijs | Hi | 11:38:12 |
couldbemathijs | Another Mathijs, how nice, even spelled the only right way ;-) | 11:57:04 |
Mathijs | Indeed, the one true spelling 👍 | 11:59:44 |
couldbemathijs | Is there any policy I should read, were it for example lists how to translate English terms that might have native equivalents, but some people use the English word in daily conversation | 13:34:07 |
Licaon_Kter[xmpp] | Think this is up to you, but we had cases where different people wanted to use the english-sounding one and the the others wanted to use an adapted local one. | 13:41:40 |
Licaon_Kter[xmpp] | Hard to break even... | 13:41:41 |
_hc | yeah, that's a common discussion point among translators, the rules vary widely depending on language and context. | 14:11:06 |
_hc | And personal preference. One thing is that whatever words are used should be consistent throughout F-Droid. | 14:13:10 |
_hc | E.g. don't use Paketquelle in some places and Repository in others. | 14:13:11 |
couldbemathijs | Can someone from the Dutch-speaking translators tell me what some of the most used versions are for Dutch? Like updaten of opwaarderen, (I'm guessing updating, but have translated a little of Debian's documentation, and over there it wasn't really that clear) and repository would litterally translated be something like opslagplaats, but I don't think I've ever heard that word used when referring to a digital repo... | 14:18:29 |
couldbemathijs | Also, how polite should I be? Jij of u? I'm guessing gij is out of the question lol | 14:19:38 |
_hc | opwaarderen sounds cooler ;-) | 14:33:12 |
Sylvia | Everyone I know uses updaten in daily life for apps, even the elderly, so I'd just use that. In general Dutch people are used to a lot of English words in tech | 14:48:47 |
Sylvia | Politeness is a good question. I never use apps in Dutch so I have no clue what is the standard, but I definitely see "je" more often than "u" in any Dutch conversation (informal seems default) so personally I'd tend to informal | 14:50:16 |
Sylvia | But yeah, no real guidelines exist I guess | 14:50:51 |
_hc | Shouldn't it be obvious by looking at the translation? That is also something that should be consistent IMHO, in German at least, where it is per Sie (formal). | 14:55:38 |

But what exactly does „reproducible build“ mean, in easy terms and without all the „tech-buzz“?
I thought I need to translate the tech-buzz as technique details.

linsui | What does "Wins and caveats" mean? | 02:54:10 |
linsui | Benefits and risk? | 02:54:19 |
Fay (she/her) | In reply to @rdfg77:kde.org Benefits and risk? close yeah. caveat means warning, essentially. | 02:57:45 |
linsui |
What is that you ask? Well: F-Droid is not tied to the single repository operated by F-Droid itself. Everyone can set up a custom repository. Like the apps F-Droid distributes, all its code is free and libre, too.
What's "it" here? F-Droid client?
| 05:56:36 |
Licaon_Kter[xmpp] | There's no "it"? You mean "its" ? | 05:59:51 |
linsui | yes | 05:59:59 |
